I spent 4 months in the Nea Kavala Refugee Camp in Polykastro, Northern Greece. It was 10 miles below the Macedonian border, but a world away from asylum into Europe. I volunteered with the We Are Here Community Centre for InterEuropean Human Aid Assoc. Germany e.V., teaching English and entertaining the camp's children with translation of Disney films, but my primary responsibility was running the Women's Centre at camp. This was a politically complicated job as the men of the camp wished for their own space and place to sip juice, listen to music, but it was wonderful to throw dance parties in a place that was so in need of joy to distract from the waiting. I also raised and brought $1,000 in books for the library and worked alongside workers from the Red Cross and Save the Children, as well as the Greek military presence.
